Narrative of Fredrick Douglas
Main Idea #2: Impact of Slavery on whites and slaves
Slavery took slaves out of their homes and the whites used them for laborious tasks resulting in the slaves lives being changed for the worse, but benefited the white man in the way they had free workers on their farms
In the case of Fredrick Douglas he was born a slave and never knew anything else
Current events like the BLM movement can be tied into this.
Slavery also influenced white men in the way they are seen today
Slave masters can't be punished for murdering a slave
Douglas states he would rather be dead then be in slavery his whole life
Main Idea #1: Varying Treatment of Slaves
Fredrick described himself as being treated fairly good for being a slave; definitely more fortunate then other slaves
Lives with serval masters, has different living conditons with each and his treated different with each
A common theme throughout slavery is that; if a slave disobeys a master or makes a mistake worthy of a punishment they will get whipped is too much of a punishment
Fredrick Describes how your master is the resulting factor in how you live, we see that Douglas lives on many differing farms throughout his career as a slave and we also see his different living conditions.
Given food monthly and clothing annually, if their clothes ripped or tore beyond repair they were forced to be naked until they got clothes next.
Often harsh conditions, like no beds, no eating utensils ect.
forbidden for learning to read or write at fear of the slaves educating themsleves and rebelling
Main idea #3: Societal relationships
Slaves relationship with society was one in which they were looked down upon as being inferior and worth less than everyone else.
We see this in The Narrative of Fredrick Douglas when Douglas is working on a ship but is nearly beaten to death by the white workers.
Fredrick Douglas describes in the narrative how society views slaves, for example Fredrick experiences first hand the brutal treatment of slaves by society and more specifically if a African American person is walking through the streets they will be questioned and asked for papers proving they are allowed to be there.
Douglas could not get these men in trouble because they were white so in court they would always win because of the way society looked at both the white men and Douglas.
