Preparing for Surgery
Scrubbing up
- Wash hands and arms with a scrub solution. 8. Rinse hands and arms again. 9. Take a sterile scrubbing brush and scrub the palm, wrist, each side of finger, thumbs and hands of left hand, using surgical scrub.
- Rinse the brush. 11. Scrub the palm, wrist, fingers, thumbs and nails of the right hand. 12. Rinse.
- Clean nails with a nail pick. 5. Wash arms and elbows, letting the water drown down the arm. 6. Rinse hands and arms.
- Repeat procedure of washing hands and arms. 14. Rinse. 15. Dry with a sterile hand towel.
- Remove any jewellery. 2. Cut nails/ remove nail varnish. 3. Wash hands with plain soap.
Gowning
- Stop when the gown sleeve cannot be advanced any further. If you are doing closed gloving, don't let your hands exit the sleeves, now locate an assistant. 6. The assistant takes hold of the inside of the gown at each shoulder and pulls it on fully. The assistant then ties the neck tie.
- The assistant then ties the back of the gown. 8. Stand still with your hands clasped at chest height to avoid contamination.
- Keeping hold of the sleeve holes and the shoulders, keep your hands high enough and let the gown unfold, without letting it touch the floor. 4. Insert your hands into the sleeves and work your arms into and along the sleeves.
- Pick up the gown and stand in a clear space. 2. Locate the sleeves holes and hold the gown by the shoulders.
Gloving
Closed Gloving
- Push the hand forwards into the glove. 8. Now pick up the left glove and repeat the process.
- Stand still with your hands clasped at chest height to avoid contamination.
- Pick up the rim with the opposite hand. 6. Pull the rim over the fingers and over the dorsal surface of the wrist.
- Keep your hands inside the cuffs of the gown and pick up the right glove by the rim of the cuff of the glove with the right hand. 4. Turn the hand over so that the glove lies on the palm surface with the fingers still pointing towards your body.
- Ask an assistant to open the glove pack. 2. Place the open glove pack so that the fingers are pointing downwards.
Open Gloving
- Ask an assistant to open the glove pack. 2. Place the open glove pack so that the fingers are pointing upwards.
- Pick up the right glove with the left hand, only handling the inner surface of the turned down cuff. 4. Pull the glove on the right hand, hooking the thumb underneath the cuff as the hand is pushed inside.
- Next pick up the left glove underneath the folded cuff with the gloved fingers of the right hand, 6. Pull the glove onto the left hand, hooking the rim over the thumb to enable the cuff of the gown to be adjusted.
- Pull the cuff of the left glove over the cuff of the gown, using the fingers of the right hand. 8. Pull the cuff of the right glove over the cuff of the gown, using the fingers of the left hand.
- Stand still with your hands clasped at chest height to avoid contamination. 10. The outer surface of the glove must not come into contact with the inner surface of the hand at any time.
