MYOLOGY OFC PART 2
STRUCTURES OF THE TMJ
Three articulating surfaces; the
mandibular fossa, articular tubercle, and
the head of the mandible
Synovial joints lined by synovial
membrane, covered by fibrocartilage
Ginglymoarthrodial joint, rotational movement in the sagittal plane and translation on its own axis
Has superior and inferior articular cavities, separated by synovial membrane
COMPONENTS OF THE TMJ
JOINT
Retrodiscal tissue, counter forward pull of the pterygoid muscle
Capsule, fiborus membrane that surrounds the TMJ joint
Articular disc, has synovial membrane and is attached to collateral ligaments, capsule, and mandibular fossa
LIGAMENTS
COLLATERAL LIGAMENTS
-
Medial collateral ligament, connects the medial aspect or the articular disc to the condyle
Lateral collateral ligament, connects lateral aspect of articular disc to the condyle

JOINTS IN THE OCF
FIBROUS JOINTS
Connected by dense, tough connective tissue

SUTURES
-
-
Simple sutures, meeting ends are smooth
Bevelled sutures, border overlaps one another
Sagittal sutures, borders have projections that interdigitate with each other

ANATOMY OF NECK MUSCLES
-
SUBDIVIDES THE TRIANGLES
Digastric; elevates hyoid, depress and retract the mandible
-
SUPRAHYOID MUSCLES
-
-
Digastric; elevates the hyoid, depress and retract the mandible
-
INFRAHYOID MUSCLES
-
-
-
Thyrohyoid, depresses the hyoid
PREVERTEBRAL MUSCLES
Longus colli, superior oblique, inferior oblique, vertical; flexion and rotation of the neck
Longus capitis, rectus capitis anterior; flexion of the head
-
Anterior scalene; elevates the 1st rib, lateral flexion of the neck
Middle scalene, posterior scalene; lateral flexion of the neck
