KETONES, PRODUCTION OF KETONES, 2P+4R - Coggle Diagram
KETONES
REDUCTION
Ketone + Reducing agent --> Secondary Alcohol
NUCLEOPHILIC ADDITION WITH HCN
Conditions:
At first, ketone must be mixed with HCn in water and acidified by dilute H2SO4
Ketone + HCN --> Hydroxynitrile
REACTIONS TO FORM TRI-IODOMETHANE
Methyl Ketone --> Intermediate --> Tri-iodomethane
CARBONYL TEST
Ketone + 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine --> deep orange Precipitate + water
FEHLING's REAGANT
Conditions:
ketone must be first heated with Fehling's reagant
Observations:
Solution stays clear
TOLLEN's REAGANT
Conditions:
Ketone must at first be warmed with tollen's reagant
Observations:
No change of colour
Oxidation
Ketones + Excess oxidising agent --> No reaction
PRODUCTION OF KETONES
Oxidation of Secondary Alcohol
Observations:
Reactions will change from orange to green
Oxidation of alkene
