Language vs. Dialects
often applied to a subordinate variety of a language and the common
assumption is that we can understand someone who speaks another dialect of our own language.

Children are taught from birth how to behave appropriately as a male or a female in their
culture, and different cultures have different standards of behavior.

looks at the social and cultural aspects of meaning and how the context of
an interaction affects it.
"Standard" of a language
it is spoken by the people who have the greatest amount of prestige, power, and
(usually) wealth.

Linguistic Relativity
human beings see the world the way they
do because the specific languages they speak influence them to do so.
code-switching
one variety is appropriate to use with some people in some situations,
and others should be used with other people or in other situations.
Lexicon
The lexicon, or vocabulary, of a language is an inventory of the items a culture talks about and has categorized in order to make sense of the world and deal with it effectively.
