Civil rights movement:
1954, Brown V Board: Father of AA girl Linda brown water her to go to a whites only school, they went to court, lost, he appealed to the Supreme Court, desegregating schools.
1955, Montgomery bus boycott: 1st December 1955, Rosa Parks refused to move from a whit only seat, she was arrested, MLK organised a bus boycott, lasted a year, bus companies lost 75% of their income, Supreme Court desegregated buses.
1957, Little Rock: 9 students wanted to attend a whit only school, they were denied entry, they took the school to court and won, desegregating schools.
1960, Sit ins: AA students sometimes accompanied by white students sat in a white only part of a restaurant, refused to leave, 1960 and 1961 around 700,000 campaigners had sit ins across the south.
1961, Freedom rides: AAs and white people sat in white only sections of buses and drove through southern states where they had refused to desegregate buses.
1963, March on Washington: MLK spoke at the largest civil rights demonstration, I have a dream speech.
1963, Black power movement: Malcolm X, violent protests, he wanted to keep the races separate and follow islam, no christianity, Malcolm X was part of the black panther party, 5000 members, militant.
Post-War America:
American Dream: Era of consumerism, luxury goods, shopping malls, 9 out of 10 people owned a TV. (This period was also known as a 'Baby boom' (Increase in births.))
Women after WW2: Most went back to being housewives, those who had jobs were in nursing, teaching and secretarial work.
Unequal Wealth: Despite the boom, many in the South were poor, no NHS (free health care.)
music (rock and roll): Teenagers spent money on music, cars, fashion, alcohol. Elvis Presley, huge icon in the 1950s.
Womens rights movement:
1963, best selling book The feminine mystique, argued that well qualified women were depressed and undervalued.
1963, equal pay act, 1964, Civil rights act banned discrimination on race or sex, 1966, National organisation for women was set up.
Equal rights amendment, 1972, many against it, failed to become part of the US constitution
1973, Roe v Wade case, legalised abortion, all women in every state had the right to safe and legal abortion.
Key words/ moments/ people:
1950s - Red scare, Communist beliefs were expanding, US and USSR rivalry, known as the Cold War.
1950 - Joseph McCarthy, fear of communism, to further his political career, list of 200 communists working for the government, lost traction when he revealed he didn't have much evidence.
Truman - Introduced a fair deal after WW2.
Eisenhower - Brought lots of businesses to the government.
Martin Luther King - Led the civil rights movement, peaceful protests.
Malcolm X - Wanted equality, favoured violent protests.
Kennedy - Introduced the New Frontier.
Johnson - Introduced the Great society.
Consumerism - ever-expanding consumption of goods benefits economy.
Rock and Roll - New music style, seen as dangerous by older generation.
Containment - Wanting to stop communism spreading out of countries.
McCarthyism - The idea that communists were everywhere, trying to take over America.
Civil rights movement - Equal rights for African-Americans.
New frontier - Domestic programmes aiming to eliminate poverty, inequality etc.
Great Society - Domestic programmes aiming to help economy, healthcare, poverty, education.
Feminist Movement - Groups who believed that there was still discrimination against women.
