Word Play
Symbolism
Symbolism is using a person, place or thing to represent something else.
Example: The bird represents freedom
Hyperbole
A hyperbole is a over-the-top exaggeration not meant to be taken literally.
Example: That tree is as tall as the moon.
Allusion
A reference to an unrelated person, place, thing, situation, or text in where there are similarities that can be made. It is often used in comparisons.
Example: He is such an Einstein (referencing how Einstein is so smart)
Imagery
Imagery is the creation of any of the five senses through Word Play, and showing not telling. It intends to paint a picture in the reader's head. Imagery is also a Literary Technique.
Example: The ocean water reflected the sparkles of dazzling light from the rays of the ever-so vibrant sun.
Figurative Language
Figurative language is when what is said/written is not what is meant by the literal sense of the words. Figurative language is also a Literary Technique.
Example:
Connotation
Connotation is a hidden meaning within a word, with a different meaning than its literal meaning.
Example: He was blue that day.
Literary Techniques
Imagery
Imagery is the creation of any of the five senses through literature. It intends to paint a picture in the reader's head. Imagery is also a Word Play.
Example: The ocean water reflected the sparkles of dazzling light from the rays of the ever-so vibrant sun.
Rule of 3's
The rule of 3's states that things sound better in groups of 3's.
Example: He was vicious, nasty, and cruel.
Circle Technique
The circle technique is a technique where you start with one topic/state, progress your story, then loop back into that first topic/state.
Example: A story that starts with a violent war, then the citizens rebel against it, which leads to another violent war.
Flashback
A piece of literature set inside a characters mind, of an event that occurred in the past.
Example: I remember the haunted house, the crying screams and the dead corpses that shook me to my core.
Sentence fluency
The formatting of sentences so that they are fluid, organized, and coherent, and the use of short sentences for emphasis.
Example: He was hiding from the people trying to catch him. He was terrified.
Tone
The attitude given towards the subjects/characters of the literature
Example: The war was vicious. It killed many. Innocent children died because of oil cruel
Mood
The mood and overall atmosphere surrounding the literature.
Example: It was a dark place, where the coldness of the air was harsh. Still, she was hopeful.
Poem Types/Structures
Lyric Poem
A poem intended to give the reader intense emotion
Example: "Go lovely rose" by Edmund Waller
Free Verse
Poems that don’t necessarily have rhythm, rhymes or patterns. They are very open for the writer.
Example: “The charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred Tennyson

Verse
A line in a poem
Example: "So long as men can breath or eyes can fee" -Shakespere, "Sonnet 18"

Elegy
A poem of serious reflection, typically for the dead.
Example: "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" by Emily Dickinson
Couplet
A pair of lines in poetry that make a complete thought and often rhyme. Also an example of word play.
Example: It happened on the summer
which became such a bummer
Sound Devices
Euphony
Sounds that are used to make give the reader a pleasant sensation and/or a sound pleasant to the ear.
Cacophony
Sounds that are used to make give the reader an unpleasant sensation and/or a sound unpleasant to the ear.
Alliteration
Repeating the same first consonant sound in multiple words in a short-span of time. Alliteration is also a Word Play.
Example: The little lion was listing lies.

Personification
A comparison where human actions or traits are given to non-human objects. This is also Word Play.
