The goal was to make the definition more clear in relation to Canadian and international sovereignty when it comes to the Arctic waters. In order to achieve this goal, the nautical miles which are used to measure the distance through water had to be changed from 100 to 200 nautical mile offshore. According to According to the Prime Minister, “this will give us jurisdiction over an additional half million square kilometres of our waters, roughly equivalent to the land mass of one of our prairie provinces.” After this bill was passed this change allowed Canada to claim sovereignty by doing their part to make decisions to prevent Arctic water pollution. To support environmental protection of the arctic waters the government would support International Polar bear research, set aside land for the expansion of conversation areas, national parks and marine protected areas, establish a arctic research station and establishing that northern search is a priority of university granting councils.
