Enlightenment: John Locke believed in life, liberty, and property. Developed liberalism
Great Awakening (1730s)- A break from old religious order to a more personal and individualistic tie to religion. This would in turn make colonists feel like they could rely less on Britain and form their own identity, not only in religion but government as well.
1688: Glorious Revolution: changed how England was governed, giving parliament more power. All of the goals were achieved without any bloodshed, making this revolution "glorious."
The influx of English Colonial Administrators:
English Administrators arrived and took over local politics. Creating a divide between Americans and the English.
English Civil War- the colonies were heavily taxed to help England pay off the war debt, leading to the first major uprisings by the colonists

Albany Congress/Join or Die Cartoon (1754)- If colonies join together they would succeed but if not they would not achieve independence. This motivated them to fight and join the cause
Stage 2: Imperial Wars
1763
Proclamation of 1763
This proclamation forbid colonists from settling west of the Appalachians to avoid further conflict with Natives. Colonists were frustrated that after winning a war against the French they could not occupy much of the land seized.

King George's War (1744-48):
American soldiers : fought for Britain to gain territory in the North. Later England gave this territory away, and the American's were angry.
Seven Years War (French and Indian War) (1756-63):
Brutal wars between the French and their allies the Natives versus the English and the Americans who lived on these lands. The English ended up winning this war, however, this led to the taxation of goods for Americans.

Tax Acts

Stamp Act (1765): For public documents, citizens had to prove they were paying taxes by having special stamped paper.
Sugar Act (1764) : made trade more difficult and expensive, everyone was affected, especially elites. citizens upset that they weren't being given "english man's rights."
Quartering Act (1765) : English would force colonists to house their troops. colonists must financially support these soldiers who were placed in their homes without consent.
