God wants everyone to be invited (lukan theme of universalism). but some will choose to make excuses & reject their invitation. the parable reminds people that each person has a choice & choices have consequences. i.e. if you reject the invitation to the KoG you will miss out
    - - to explain that gaining a place in the KoG means actively using what God has given you (i.e. following Jesus' ethical teachings/spreading the good news) to help others. it also points out that whilst we cant know exactly when Jesus will return, there is plenty for people to do in preparation

    - - 'master' = God. 'original guests' = Jews, 'servant' = Jesus, 'poor' = gentiles, 'banquet' = the KoG
  - - - Jesus explains that the KoG is somewhere that Satan/evil is defeated, thus when he drives out evil spirits (exorcisms) Jesus is demonstrating that the KoG has arrived. So if a person isnt 'with Jesus' in this situation then there are considered 'against Jesus' - each person must make a choice about how to respond
    - - Jesus explains that being Jewish (& keeping the Jewish law) isn't enough to enter the KoG. Jesus says a person. "sell everything you have & give to the poor ... then come follow me". Jesus points out that sacrifice now will ensure eternal life in the future. in particular, monetary wealth can be a significant barrier to entering the KoG... "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God"
    - - Jesus teaches that although all are invited to the KoG (including those on margins of society) not all will manage to meet the entry requirements of listening to God's message & responding positively by upholding the standards/values of the KoG. However, those who do the right thing will share in the KoG
    - - Jesus drawers parallels between various O.T. characters (like Noah, Abraham, Lot, Solomon, Jonah) & Jesus. Such charters feature in O.T. stories about God's judgement & God's salvation for those who trust God & obey him (even when God's judgement seems to ask the impossible!) alongside punishment for those who don't (e.g. Lot's wife). Jesus teaches that 0 just like in O.T. times - those who don't listen to God's message (& act on it) won't enter the KoG & receive salvation. Jesus thus encourages all people to be prepared to make sacrifices to enter the KoG by making it a priority to practice the standards/values of KoG rather than amassing wealth & status in this life
