Polarity and Electronegativity - Coggle Diagram
Polarity and Electronegativity
Bond Polarity
Differences in Electronegativity results in
Decreased bond length and increased bond strength
Increased ionic character
Percent ionic character is the amount of electron sharing between two atoms.
Polar Covalent Bonds
Note: Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract bonding electrons. It increases as you move closer to fluorine (Top Right)
Types of bonds
Non-polar Covalent
Two atoms sharing electrons equally.
Between two of the same non-metal
Polar Covalent
Two atoms share electrons unequally. One atom gets more of the electron density than the other.
Occurs between two non-metals of different elements
Ionic
Between a cation and an anion. One atom gains electrons and one atom loses them.
Between a metal and a non-metal
Polarizability
The measure of how easily a molecule's dipole moment is affected by other dipole moments.
