International Agreements in the 1930's
Stresa Pact, April 1935
French, Italians, and British became involved in talks
This was due to worry about Hitler's attempt to achieve Anschluss
Agreement stated that each country would resist any attempt to overturn existing treaties
Very vague treaty, no real substance or consequence
Anglo-German Naval Agreement, 1935
Germany allowed by Britain to increase its navy to 35% of British navy, and to build submarines
Germany was going to rebuild anyway, and the only way Britain could stop it was by going to war, which they did not want
This had not been discussed with Stresa partners
Created distrust within the Stresa pact, led to fallout and eventual Italian support of Germany
Rome-Berlin Axis, 1936
Agreement formally linking Germany and Italy
Renamed/formalized as the pact of steel
Promised that they would help each other in event of a war
Allowed Hitler to go ahead with plans to attack Poland
Anti-Comitern Pact, 1936
Agreement between Germany and Japan
Directed by implication specifically against Soviet Union
Japan angry due to Chinese's-Soviet non-aggression treaty, and by weapons trade between the two countries
Italy joined a year later and it became known as the axis alliance
Hitler presented himself through propaganda as protector against Soviet communism
