Zimbardo's prison study
-
Sane people (gathered through volunteer sampling) were assigned the role of prisoner or prison guard
The prison guards conformed to the social role of prison guards by becoming emotionally and physically abusive
The guards made the prisoners do excessive exercise, clean toilets with their bare hands, pick nettles out their beds
This treatment dehumanised the prisoners and caused some of them to have mental breakdowns. These extreme results meant the experiment was stopped just 5 days in when it was supposed to be 2 weeks long
The prisoners were so dehumanised they started calling themself their prison number instead of their name
These extreme results meant the experiment was stopped just 5 days in when it was supposed to be 2 weeks long
