Thomas Paine (Common Sense) 1776 Paine's Common Sense was written with the intent of rallying colonist support for independence (patriotism except without an actual country yet) Common Sense contained Enlightenment ideals with basic language in order to apply Locke's ideas to the situation with Great Britain and emphasize the message to the common colonists.

Enlightenment (John Locke) 1689 Locke wrote the Two Treatises of Government which advocated for the colonists' rights to life, liberty, and property. Believed these rights were inalienable.
Great Awakening 1730-1740 Convergence of colonial and English religions. Previously, Old Light were believed to be the only outlet to communicating with God. The Great Awakening saw religious empowerment as colonists did not need churches to have contact with God.
