“Alas, no longer.”
This makes the reader question if she was the one to kill the bird. She never directly states she killed it, only that she stuffed it. But Billy swore it was alive before he came in to the hotel.
-
“No, my dear,” she said. ‘Only you.'
This is the last line in the story and it leaves the reader wandering why he was the only guest in 2 years and if he would be her next victim.

setting-Jonah

The room was wonderfully warm and cosy

“That parrot,” he said at last. “You know something? It had me completely fooled when I first saw it through the window from the street. I could have sworn it was alive.”

plot-Max/Paige
"The back was hard and cold, and
when he pushed the hair to one side with
his fingers, he could see the skin
underneath, greyish-black and dry and
perfectly preserved."
This goes with the plot because the plot was about her killing things and stuffing them. This shows she put extreme detail into it. That means she really loves doing this.
“Not in the least,” she said. “I stuff all my
little pets myself when they pass away. Will
you have another cup of tea?”
This shows she doesn't mind stuffing things. This also shows that once the people that stay with her pass she stuffs them.
“I’m almost positive it was in the
newspapers I saw them,” Billy said. “I’ll
think of it in a second. I’m sure I will.”
This is hinting that he probably saw them in the paper has missing. He can't think of it but we can infer that what it is. The both went missing at the same place so we can guess the land lady has something to do with it
“Left?” she said, arching her brows. “But my
dear boy, he never left. He’s still here. Mr
Temple is also here. They’re on the third
floor, both of them together.”
If they are missing this shows there still with her. Their most likely dead and she stuffed them just like she does with her animals.
“No, my dear,” she said. ‘Only you."
This shows she keeps the men till they die then stuff them. That's why not to many people have been there because she can wait till they die which tales time.
