Nature of vulcanicity
Primary
Tephra
Solid material ejected into the atmosphere. The material varies in size and could cause damage when it hits the ground
Pyroclastic flow
Caused by explosive eruptions or collapse of eruption column. Hot , gas charged, high velocity flow of tephra. Flows down the side of the volcano
Eruption column
Explosive eruptions cause a mushroom cloud. Made up of steam, dark masses of pyroclastic material and clouds of fine ash
Volcanic gas
Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide and chlorine released from volcano
Lava flow
The flow of lava out of the vent, down the side of the volcano
Secondary
Tephra
Volcanic mud flows which move downhill very rapidly. Melt / erode sediment or snow on volcano. Ash condenses and falls, creating mudflow.
