STORAGE
DEFINITION
-
-
storage : holds data, instructions and information for future use.
storage media : the physical material on which a computer keeps data, information, programs and applications.
-
TYPES OF STORAGE MEDIA
USB FLASH DRIVES
-
•Flash memory storage is a storage media that uses solid-state chip that maintains stored data without any external power source.
-
HARD DISK
•High-capacity storage.
•Components enclosed in airtight, sealed case for protection.
Storage device that contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions and information.
SOLID STATE DRIVES
A storage device that uses flash memory to store data, instructions and information.
-
OPTICAL DISCS
• Optical disc is a storage media that consists of flat, round, portable disc made of metal, plastic and lacquer that is written and read by a laser.
• Stores data in deformities on the surface of a circular disc and reads this data by illuminating the surface with a laser diode and observing the reflection.
• Primarily used to store software, data, digital photos, movies and music.
-
-
Compast Disc(CD)
CD-R
Users can write (in separate time), but not erase.
-
CD-RW
Users read and write on multiple time, erasable.
• A type of optical disc used to store data, songs, drivers, and program files.
MEMORY CARDS
• Flash memory storage that users insert and remove from a slot in personal computer, smartphone, digital camera, or card reader / writer.
• Examples: Compact Flash, microSD, Memory Stick Micro
CHARACTERISTIC
- storage has bigger capacity compared to memory, which has limited capacity.
- transfer rate of storage is slower compared with the transfer rate of memory
- storage is non-volatile; it does not lose its contents even when the power is off.
