Supervisor meeting notes - 2021-10-20
Only Stephen, Kate and I present
Mark presented Covid symptoms that day so couldn't attend
Derek had a teaching clash
Presentation
Went through some results from stage 1 of processing of recording data
Components
Hollow voussoirs most common component form ID'd in contrast to normal assemblages with roofing tiles dominant
Ran through range of distinctive and unusual components identified
Includes hollow voussoirs, Westhampnett voussoirs, half box flue tiles and roller-die stamped tile
Emphasised range of hollow voussoir dimensions recorded and reality of Lancaster's reliance on perfect formulae
Fabrics
Certain fabrics are early as closely tied to specific early component forms
Range of other fabrics seem more linked to middle phase, though maybe more complicated
Closely comparable to many Minety products, as suggested through analysis of roller-die and text-stamp distributions and results identified previously
Regional Context
Close parallels between many text stamp and kiln site samples and RB fabrics
Some surprises in similarities, e.g. TCM fabric and St Oswald's kiln site sample to F17/18 and F14 respectively
Minety likely provided much of the brick and tile to RB throughout its history, but pXRF analysis could significantly confirm or deny this picture
If correct, however, indicates emerging regional picture of major kiln site supplying large projects across the region and high status very Roman villas, but not so much other rural settlements
Could bring identity strand back in as would suggest brick and tile were perceived as Roman materials for Roman architecture, with foci at Roman settlement forms
Must be careful given limitations of evidence, however
Stephen and RB queries
Stephen leaving on 31st December
Amanda starts in early January, so no interim period between them
Stephen likely to still be invoved in RB or foundation after leaving, so unlikely to loose contact completely
Very unlikely that Amanda will revoke sampling permissions granted by Stephen, but may have comments or suggested amendments
Stephen will try and setup a meeting to introduce Amanda to me, as could prove very useful
Stephen will try and locate a pot of money for the ex-situ sampling, that way it could go ahead as soon as any money is found and BU money could be saved for in-situ sampling if go ahead given
Also discussed extension request and that BU alone would be responsible for funding this
Stone sampling
Talked over stages with Zosia prior to meeting
Will involve coordinating dates between facilities and events team at RB, with Cliveden and with Zosia
Whole process could take 4 weeks from start to finish, though more likely 6 weeks once sampling and site visits are factored in
On this basis Kate suggested a deadline date for HE permission to be granted in late November, which seems very practical and realistic
Kate (and perhaps other supervisors) would like to be present during some sampling to see how it is undertaken
Kate did emphasise that were permissions granted later, then in-situ sampling could go ahead and results either be included in the thesis post-viva or even written up as a separate journal article
It would definitely be hugely disappointing to be given permission so late and do nothing with it
Equally though could form the basis of future work with much more time and energy devoted to geological sampling across outcrops at Bath, perhaps in concert with review of CBM from other sites in Bath?
Stephen said he would nudge HE and emphasise that he is leaving soon in order to get them to respond more quickly
Problem is that while Mel responds quite quickly, the application requires comments from other specialists at HE and they are not very effective at timely cross-department cooperation
Stephen did note that in the last decade HE have got much better at responding, but seem to be drifting back to a 6 month reply period perhaps due to pandemic or copying of pre-application proces of councils
Not much hope of a response before the end of November deadline then, but maybe before the end of the project
I have emailed him this week to check up on this
