DEFINITION OF ADAPTER CARD
A circuit board that enhances the functions of a component of a system unit and/or provides connections to peripheral devices.
PERIPHERAL
A device that connects to the system
unit and is controlled by a processor in a computer.
EXAMPLES
modem, printer, scanner, keyboard, video camera, microphone or speakers.
TYPES OF ADAPTER CARDS
- BLUETOOTH
To connect to Bluetooth devices such as Bluetooth mouse.
- MIDI
To connect musical instruments and similar devices such as electronic guitar or MIDI keyboard through a MIDI connector to a computer
- NETWORK
- MODEM
Allows a computer to send and receive data through telephone or cable lines.
To connect to other computers and peripherals via a network cable.
- SOUND
- USB
- VIDEO
Connects to speakers or a microphone.
Connects to high- speed USB ports.
- VIDEO CAPTURE
Provides enhanced graphics capabilities, such as accelerated processing or the ability to connect a second monitor.
Connects to a digital video camera, television or DVD player and convert the analog signals into digital form and compresses the data.
