STORAGE - Coggle Diagram
STORAGE
DEFINITION
- Holds data, instructions and information for future use
CHARACTERISTICS
- None-volatile (does not lose its contents even when the power is off.)
- Has bigger capacity
- Transfer rate of storage is lower.
-
-
TYPES OF STORAGE MEDIA
HARD DISKS
- Contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions and information.
Characteristic:
- high-capacity storage
- components enclosed in airtight, sealed case for protection
Types of hard disks:
- Internal hard disk
- external hard disk
INTERNAL HARD DISKS
- Can be mounted inside a desktop or laptop.
- HDD come in two sizes. The 3.5" model is mostly used in Desktop computers and the 2.5" model is used in Laptops.
EXTERNAL HARD DISKS
- A separate freestanding storage device that connects with a cable to a USB port or other port on a computer or mobile device.
SOLID STATE DRIVES
- Uses flash memory to store data, instructions and information.
- Characteristic:
- SSDs contain no moving parts.
- Current SSDs storage capacities up to 8TB
- BENEFITS
- Faster access tme.
- Faster transfer rates.
- More durable & shock resistant (no moving parts).
- Use less energy
- Generate less heat
- Consume less power.

FLASH MEMORY STORAGE
- Uses solid-state chip that maintains stored data without any external power source.
- Commonly used in portable electronicts and removeable storage devices.
- more durable and shock resistant than other types of secondary storage because it contains no moving parts.
TYPES OF FLASH MEMORY STORAGE:
- USB flash drive
- Memory cards
USB FLASH DRIVE
- Users plug in a USB port on computers or mobile devices.
MEMORY CARDS
- Users insert and remove from a slot in personal computer, smartphone, digital camera, or card reader/writer.
- Examples: Compact Flash, microSD, Memory Stick Micro
OPTICAL DISC
- Consists of flat, round, portable disc made of metal, plastic and lacquer that is written and read by a laser.
- Stores data in deformities on the surface of a circular disc and reads this data by illuminating the surface with a laser diode and observing the reflection.
- Primarily used to store software, data, digital photos, movies and music.
TYPES OF OPTICAL DISC
- Compact Disc (CD)
- Digital Video Disc (DVD)
- Blu-ray (BD)
COMPACT DISC (CD)
- Used to store data, songs, drivers and program files.
- TYPES OF CD:
- CD-ROM (Users can read but not write/record/ erase)
- CD-R (Users can write in separate time but not erase)
- CD-RW ( Users read and write on multiple time, erasable)
DIGITAL VIDEO DISC (DVD)
- Used mainly as video and data storage.
- Holds over 7 times a CD'S capacity.
TYPES OF DVD:
- DVD-ROM
- DVD-R
- DVD-RW
BLUE-RAY DISC (BD)
- TYPES OF BD:
- BD-ROM
- BD-R
- BD-RE
