Types of Modifiers
Nouns can be modified or changed by adjectives and other nouns
Order
(adjective modifier) + (noun modifier) + head noun
Neymar is a famous (AM) soccer (NM) player (HN)
Types of Adjective Modifiers
Present participal (-ing)
describes someone or something that causes a feeling
It was a
boring
movie (The movie
caused
viewers to be bored)
Past Participal (-ed/-n)
describes someone who experiences a feeling
The
bored
viewers left the movie (The viewers experienced the feeling of boredom)
Order of Modifiers
Fixed Order
Opinion
: ugly, beautiful, dull, interesting)
size
: big, tall, small, short, huge
age/temperature:
old, young, youthful, 23, hot, cold
shape:
square, round, circle, triangle
color
: red, blue, yellow, black
6. origin, nationality, social class
: computer-generated, Mexican, Irish, middle class, upper-class, working class
material:
wood, cotton, plastic, glass
purpose
: action, party, sports, residential (property)
Exception: You can change the order to emphasize one adjective over another (He was a young (3), interesting man(1)) [Speaker wants to emphasize his youth])
Modifiers in the Same Category
separate adjectives with a comma
How do you know if they are in the same category?
Add "and" between modifiers. If resulting statement is logical, they are in the same category
He is a serious and hardworking student (logical=same category)
I bought a beautiful and denim shirt (illogical=not the same category
He is a serious, hardworking student (same category)
If you use adjectives from the same category, you can vary the order
He is a serious, hardworking student
OR
he is a hardworking, serious student
Compound Modifiers
Compound modifiers consist of more than one word

Hyphenate (-)

plural noun modifiers become singular when used in front of noun
