THE PRIVILEGE OF COMING OUT: RACE, CLASS, AND LESBIANS' MOTHERING DECISIONS
Coming Out
White people
middle class
stressful
silent tolerance
acceptance and supported
working class
silent tolerance
usually remained neutral
don't need community's protection
People of Color
Church
-possibly get ostracized or rejected
-too hard to come out
-told not to talk about it or say anything
Community
-generally accepted
-"don't ask don't tell"
-goes against traditional values so rejected too
possibly alienated
worse for POC because racism drives the homophobia even more
Becoming a Mother
don't have protections in secular institutions
stressful process and looked down upon
usually necessary to come out to family
Remaining Childfree
looked down upon in traditional households/communites
less stress
no need to immediately come out
racism and sexism
people of color suffer more
makes it necessary to be in a community, but that's difficult for people of color who come out
white people don't need support from communities because they don't have to be extra careful of racism
