Definition of storage and storage device
Storage holds data, instructionsand informationfor future use.
Characteristics of storage
1) Storage is non-volatile ,it does not lose contents when the power is off
2)Storage has bigger capacity compared to memory, which has limited capacity
Definition of storage capacity
Capacity is the number of bytes(characters) a storage medium can hold.
Definition of storage device:
Hardwarethat records and/or retrieves items to and from storage media.
Definition of storage media
The physical materialon which a computer keeps data, information, programs and applications.
Types of storage media
Hard Disk
Function:
Storage device that contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data ,instructions and information
Characteristic:
-High-capacity storage.
-Components enclosed in airtight ,sealed case for protection.
Internal hard disks
An internal hard disk can be mounted inside a desktop or laptp
External hard disk
An external hard disk is separate freestanding storage device that connects with a cable to a USB part
Solid State Drives
Function
A storage device that uses flash memory to store data , instructions and information
Characteristics
SSDs contain no moving parts
Current SSDs storage capacities up to 8TB.
Flash Memory Storage
USB flash drive
Flas hmemory storage that users plug in a USB port on computers or mobile devices
Memory cards
Flash memory storage that users insert and remove from a slot in personal computer, smartphone, digital camera, or card reader/writer
Example: Compact Flash, micro SD, Memory Stick Micro
Optical disc
Optical disc is a storage media that consists of flat round, portable disc made of metal ,plastic and lacquer that is written and read by a laser.
Compact Disc (CD)
A type of optical discussed to store data ,songs ,drivers ,and program files
Types of CD
a) CD-ROM : Users can read but not write (record) or erase
b) CD-R : Users can write (in separate time), but not erase
c) CD-RW : Users read and write on multiple time, erasable
Digital Video Disc (DVD)
•Used mainly as video and data storage.
•Holds over 7 times a CD’s capacity.
•Types of DVD are:
a) DVD-ROM
b) DVD-R
c)DVD-RW
Blue-ray Disc (BD)
A type of optical discussed to store high-definition and ultrahigh-definition videos and movies.
