Ecology of the School - Coggle Diagram

- - - - school must provide factual information about harmful effects of drugs
      - collaboration with parents & community members must occur to support & strengthen students' resistance to substances
      - school should provide services > confidential identification, assessment, & referral to appropriate treatment programs for users & abusers
      - substance use should be monitored within the school, establishing clear guidelines & penalties for usage
    - - schools play an especially import role through well-implemented school programs promoting lifelong physical activity, healthy eating, reductions in television viewing time
    - - behaviors that intentionally threaten, attempt, or inflict harm on others
      - risk factors : 1) individual risk factors; 2) relationship risk factors; 3) community/societal risk factors
      - macrosystem -- implement laws > NCLB, which mandates safe schools, fund preventative programs; exosystem -- businesses can support schools > rebuild impoverished communities, role models, offer opportunities for field trips, guest speakers, fund after-school activities; mesosystem -- link between schools & families > empower families to share responsibility for creating a safe school environment, link between communities & families > provide services to support families ; microsystem -- implement a curricular priority of anger management & conflict resolution, classes for parents, teacher training.
    - - emergency plans need to address a range of events & hazards caused by nature & by people
      - 4 phases of crisis management -- 1. mitigation/prevention; 2. preparedness; 3. response; 4. recovery
- - - - large schools > more money & more services, competition for leadership; children in smaller schools are more involved in activities, more leadership opportunities, higher achievement, better discipline, better attendance, higher graduation rates
      - student connection to school associated with school size, discipline policies, student friendship
    - - affects opportunities to interact , number of learning activities, cooperative behavior, quicker feedback, faster identification of discipline problems & faster resolution
    - - provide support > donating resources, time (equipment, expert guest speakers, provide field trips, offer apprenticeship training.
    - - community service experience > positive educational reform option
