This is where it begins
Celebrates the power of storytelling and ability of language to connect individuals to their cultural heritage despite the distance of time and space
Identity - the poet is understanding their identity via stories and anecdotes told or retold from their family therefore the poet is able to understand themselves on a different level and appreciate their heritage through the telling's of their ancestors.
Culture - The poet generates their cultural belongings through reliance on a fragmented memory of the past which allows for a reasonable description of their past minus the accuracy of the structure of them.
Language - The connection the poet has toward her cultures native tongue is physical as well as deeply spiritual. Parallels are drawn between the languages as the poet says them in Spanish, and translates them into English, in which these words are then given meaning in the light of ancestry and spirits.
Translucent jade
A seemingly simple poem that depicts the poets complex relationship with her past and her own shifting identity
Identity - The poet's belayed desire to reconnect with their culture results in a fractured cultural identity in the sense that the poet does not fully understand why this name is so welcome but instead rejoices in the way it sounds and feels.
Culture - the old Chinese name connects her back with her Chinese heritage and culture which has been missing for so long.
Language - reclaiming ones cultural identity through the powers of language and name - "gift" being linked to ancestral name, linked to culture and heritage.
New Accents
this poem reveals the power of language to alienate. His expereince of linguistic displacement as an immigrant
Language - Yu suffers from the english language and it can be demoralising, as a result he is constantly mocked or ridiculed. English society is imposing onto its migrants
Culture - Yu attempts to embrace his new culture, however him just like other migrants find it difficult to fit in due to them being excluded as a result their accents and difficulties.
Identity - Poem illustrates the loss of identity as they move into a new culture and the marginalisation of them rooting from the cultural superiority. Yu's voice has been disempowered due to his difficulty with the english language, this has shaped his identity.
Home
A triptych style poem that reveals the complexities of the poets hybrid culture and identity whilst also revealing the transcendental power of language.
Culture - The poet never truly reconnects with their culture but instead decides to confide completely into their religious landscape and be satisfied which is what is available as a cultural home.
-
Identity - Personal identity is formed differently in comparison to the other poems as the poet finds their personal identity through their faith. This three-staged poem shows the transformation into oneness and wholeness the poet has underwent to find both their physical identity as well as their spiritual.
Circular breathing
poem that narrates the poet;s experience of cultural questioning when travelling in italy. The sounds of one didgeridoo act as a catalyst for self questioning.
Identity - This poem involves a lot of questioning of identity as a whole. Where people of other nationalities don't understand the inauthenticity of a non-native Australian playing a native instrument and this poet sort of questions the integral understanding of identity completely as all it takes to be identified as an Australian of any genre is through globally recognised icons which are representative to that country.
Language - Language helps to determine both the culture and identity of a person, in non-English speaking countries if an English speaking person attempts to communicate to a resident it becomes immediately apparent that the culture and identity of this individual is completely altered as their understanding is only limited to what they see around them.
Culture - Really the same thing for culture as identity, culture is recognised in a different way when placed in a different cultural environment. People in another country will not immediately recognise your cultural heritage unless provided with a symbol of said background.
