SELECTION PROCESS
NCCA and CCP submit a list of recommendees
to the President
NCCA and CCP receive nominations.
They screen & deliberate.
The Order of National Artists are conferred
during ceremonies organized by the NCCA and CCP.
NCCA/CCP announces opening for nominations
CRITERIA
Artists whose distinctive style and pioneering
works create an impact on succeeding artists
Artists who have exhibited excellence in their art forms
Artists who have contributed
to nation-building through the content & form of their works
Artists whose art forms have enriched artistic expression or style
Must be a Filipino Citizen
Artists who have gained national & international recognition
HONORS & PRIVILEGES
A lifetime emolument & material and
physical benefits
Cash award of P100,000 net of taxes,
for living awardees
Cash award of P75,000 net of taxes, for posthumous
awardees, payable to legal heir/s
A monthly life pension, medical &
hospitalization benefits
A state funeral & burial at the
Libingan ng mga Bayani
A place of honor, in line with protocolar precedence, at national state functions & recognition at cultural events
Life insurance coverage for awardees
who are still insurable
The rank & title of National Artist,
as proclaimed by the President of the Philippines

The CCP Board of Trustees was
named as the National Artists
Awards Committee
R.A.No. 7356 (April 2, 1992) - The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA) was given extensive responsibilities over the development & promotion of the Filipino National Culture and the Arts
Proclamation No. 1001 (1972) Establishment of the National Artist Award (Gawad Pambansang Alagad nd Sining)
Under Former Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the National Artist Award was renamed the Order of National Artists
Executive Order No. 236 (Sept. 19, 2003) Granted additional prestige on the National Artist Award by raising it to the level of a Cultural Order
