2.6 ADAPTER CARDS
Types of adapter cards
Bluetooth
Function:
- Enables Bluetooth connectivity
- To connect to Bluetooth devices such as Bluetooth mouse
MIDI
Functions:
- To connect musical instrument and similar devices such as electronic guitar or MIDI keyboard through a MIDI connector to a computer
Functions:
- Used in creating digital music
- Allows a musical instrument, often a keyboard, to be connected to the computer. The instrument can then be used as an input device to create music or audio information that can then be saved onto the computer
Modem
Functions:
- Allows a computer to send and receive data through telephone or cable lines
Functions:
- The main problem with modem cards was speed, which was limited to 56 Kbps
Network
Functions:
- To connect to other computers and peripherals via a network cable
Functions:
- Some network interface cards also allows wireless networking
Wireless Network card
Functions:
- Enables wireless connectivity
- To connect to others computer/devices wireless
Wifi + Bluetooth functions:
Sound
Functions:
- Connects to speakers or a microphone.
USB
Functions:
- Connects to high-speed USB ports
Video
Function:
- Provides enhanced graphics capabilities, such as accelerated processing or the ability to connect a second monitor
Video Capture
Functions:
- Connects to a digital video camera, television or DVD player and convert the analog signals into digital form and compresses the data
M.2 SSD
Functions:
- To supports PCIE M.2 SSD such as M.2 PCIE-based SSDs, M.2 SATA-based SSDs and mSATA SSD

- Peripheral is a device that connects to the system unit and is controlled by a processor in a computer
- Examples of peripherals: modem, printer, scanner, keyboard, video camera, microphone or speakers
- Adapter cards can be inserted into an expansion slot or adapter card slot on a motherboard
Today's computer support Plug and Play technology which means the computer automatically can recognize peripheral devices as user install them
