Approach
WHATS ABOUT
The participatory approach is similar to Content-Based Instruction in that it begins with content that is meaningful to the students. The difference is that the content comes from topics that concern students more than the content of subjetc-matter texts.
-
ORIGIN
It originated un the late 1950s, with the work of Paulo Freire, a brazilian, ( he wrote a book called pedagogy of the oppressed where he strongly critized how teaching was at that time) it was not until the 1980s that the participatory approach srated being widely discussed in the language Teaching literature.
GOAL
The goal of a participatory approach is to help students understand the social, historical, or cultural forces that shaped a particular context, followed by helping to empower sttudents to take action and make decisions in order to gain control about their lives in that context (Wallerstein 1983)
BASED ON
The central premise of Freire´s approach is that education and knowledge are positioned with high value only when they help people to be free from the social conditions that oppress them.
The participatory approach is based in a growing awareness of the role that education and language education have in creating and perpetuating power dynamics in society.
The curriculum
Is based on the demand and the needs of the learner. Also, the content is not about subject matter, is about issues of interest.
The students learn how to use the language in order to apply it in real world situations. Following that, introducing topics and activities that allows the class to use the language according their needs. Focusing in the form of the language that can be given within a focus on content relevant to the lives of the students.
