LEAD Academy - Challenges, Solutions and action plan
Challenge 1:
Lack of learner motivation and agency
Reason 1:
Uninteresting, long videos and traditional online graded quizzes
Solution:
Break down long course videos into bite-sized, interactive videos with in-built, ungraded formative assessments to create an active learning environment
Interactive videos help engage and hold learner attention.
What's an interactive video?
Using bite-sized videos enables learners to learn on the go. If this is followed by a short ungraded formative assessment(quiz, flash card, response etc), the learners will feel a sense of accomplishment and are more likely to complete.
Ungraded assessments during learning can not only help learners self-evaluate effectively but also help them prepare for graded quizzes that follow, with ease.
Reason 2:
Low salary, little or no recognition and rewards
Solution:
Recognise and reward learners through micro-credentialing and digital badges, in addition to the certification LEAD Academy provides.
Micro-credentials and badging:
They will help learners get a picture of their learning progress in shorter intervals than wait for the final assessment. Also, they help learners communicate what they have learnt in the course, effectively to others.

Digital badge is a living document that is controlled by the person who earned it and is validated by the issuer based on the criteria for awarding the badge
What is a digital badge?
Reason 3:
Rigid and pre-decided learning pathways
Why?
Since adults are self-directed, they should have a say in the content and process of their learning.
Knowles' five assumptions for adult learners
How?
Use Self-mapped learning pathways in the design of online learning courses.
Self-Mapped Learning Pathways are a method for designing course content in a heutagogical fashion to allow for learner autonomy and self-regulation while also scaffolding learners that need more direct instruction or are not ready for full autonomy.
Challenge 2:
Technology infrastructure and accessibility issues.
Reason 1:
Limited or no access to devices for learning
Solution -
Make devices available in a phased manner for learners.
Step 1: School can provide some devices that can be shared by teachers, inside school premises or by taking them home. They can take rotations to use the devices for learning.
Step 2: Once there are enough funds, school can either provide devices for teachers or set up a computer lab/use the existing computer lab for learning.
Reason 2:
Limited or no access to internet/mobile data
Solution:
Make learning resources available offline in schools for teachers and principals.
How?
Set up a local server box in school, which can store learning material and data coming from the learner devices when they connect to the server box. The box can be periodically connected to internet by taking it to a location with internet access.
Reason 3:
Electricity shortage and power outages.
Solution:
Use devices that store power and can be used in emergency situations.
Install UPS(Uninterruptible power supply) apparatus in school staff room for emergency use in events of electricity failure.
Provide power banks for mobile phones, to teachers.
Challenge 3:
Lack of support and opportunities for learner collaboration/social learning
.
1. Lack of support for learners
Solution:
Integrate virtual learning assistants(existing or build new) to the LEAD Academy learning app, which can answer queries from learners, create personalized learning plans for learners and give real-time feedback.
Examples:
Cognii virtual learning assistant
Century Tech
2. No collaborative/social learning
Solution 1:
Set up online communities of practice in the learning environment, to promote discussions, for learners to seek and give support to each other.
Solution 2:
Integrate tech tools that enable social learning on the app
.
Examples:
Video discussion tool - Flipgrid
Padlet
Challenge 4:
Learning System is not accessible to all types of learners.
Solution 1:
Include standalone courses/videos on required digital skills for educators, for them to learn how to use basic tech tools as they learn.
Solution 2:
Redesign the learning environment/experience by adhering to
ADA compliance for online course designs
and make it accessible to all learners.
Solution 3:
Periodically run compliance tests by using Accessibility Browser Extensions,
Axe by Deque systems
for example.
