Synapse
-
Structures
- Postsynaptic cell: the cell receiving the signal
- Synaptic cleft: the space between the presynaptic & postsynaptic cells
- Presynaptic cell: the cell sending the signal
- Neurotransmitters: Signaling chemicals
- Synaptic Vesicles: contains neurotransmitters
- Receptor Site: location where neurotransmitters bind
Function
- Synaptic vesicles release neurotransmitters into synaptic cleft (exocytosis)
- neurotransmitters bind to receptor sites on postsynaptic cell
- Action Potential arrives at presynaptic portions of synapse
- Postsynaptic cell depolarizes and action potential continues (maybe)
- Neurotransmitter is degraded and recycled
-
Potentials
Action
-
- Activation of sodium ion channels (sodium ions enter cell)
- Deactivation of potassium ion channels returns membrane to resting potential
- Depolarization to threshold - all-or-none principle
- Deactivation of sodium ion channels and activation of potassium ion channels (potassium ions exit)
