Listening
This is an important skill because research has shown that comprehensible language input is important for the development of language
Strategies in Teaching Listening Skills
Total physical response (TPR):
Language teaching approach in which students physically respond to language input (commands) to internalize the meaning and demonstrate their comprehension of the language
TED Talks
: This can be great for older and more advanced learners as TED Talks are usually very interesting. Feature visual aids to support comprehension.
Search for Authentic Speech in Audio Clips
: This is crucial because most audio clips from a textbook do not capture the complexities of spoken English. Context plays an important role in speech, so it would may be more beneficial if the teacher can acquire a piece of audio that best captures this.
Listening Centers in the classroom
: A space in which students have access to audio materials. Maybe audiobooks can be a part of this
Speaking
When prompted to speak, students may become aware of their gap in input vs. output comprehension. Nonetheless, it is important to allow students the opportunity to practice their speaking skills so that they may learn to more effectively communicate their thoughts and respond to others
Strategies in Teaching Speaking Skills
Oral retellings
: After reading a story, the teacher can ask students to summarize the main events of the story in their own words
Songs
: Having students sing along to songs (must be at an appropriate pace and vocab level for the students) is a great way to make vocab acquisition and pronunciation easier
Oral Presentations
: Any type of oral presentation in which students present to the class a topic or area of study. Gives students opportunity practice speaking English in a public setting. Types of presentation can range from show-and-tell to ones focusing on a specific topic covered in class
Classroom Interaction
Puts listening and speaking skills to use. Students should be given the opportunity to interact with each other and the teacher in focused activities
