Why Turkey is invading Syria ?
In 2011: Syria civil war --> many protests about the authoritarian government who leave the north of the country
In 2013: the ISIS group took the north --> the Kurds (majority ethnic group of the country) were conquest by the terrorist group --> the Kurds counter attacked with success
USA brought support to the Kurds vs. the ISIS
In 2015: the Kurdish and non-Kurdish created the SDF (Syria Democratic Forces) --> ISIS group :red_cross:
In 2015, the Kurdish and non-Kurdish created the SDF (Syria Democratic Forces) to swept up the ISIS group
The Kurds won + had and autonomous territory in the north of S --> 11 000 ISIS fighters ==> to jail
US army checked the border with Turkey
In Turkey Erdogan considered the Kurds has a big thread ==> because of the PKK (Kurds separatist group) ==> fight against the Turks government for decades
For Erdogan the PKK = the SDF ==> he saw the border very dangerous
In 2016: Turks troops attacked the northwest of Syria to push back ISIS + block the expansion of the Kurds
In 2018 : Turks attacked the northwest to beat the SDF
At that time: Turkey suffered of a poor economy (unemployment increase…) for Turkey ==> the fault of the Syrian refugees
In 2019: Erdogan lost 11 seats in local elections --> the pro Kurd party won 8 seats
After the election: Erdogan created a “safe zone” between Turkey and Syria
Turkey + USA control this zone along 5 km in the north of Syria
BUT Erdogan proposed to the ONU a bigger safe zone (30 km and 480 km)
The main goal of this safe zone: put back the Syrian refugees in it
USA: D. Trump bring back his American troops of the north of Syria --> stopped the alliance with the Kurds
Turkey entered in Syria with a lot of violence
The north of Syria is still without any government --> the Kurds made an accord with the Syrian President --> only way to survive
