- - - - Henry’s wife, Catherine of Aragon, had given him a daughter, Mary, but no son. Catherine had had several miscarriages and it was clear that the chances of her giving birth to a healthy son were small. Henry believed that to make sure the Tudor dynasty survived he had to have a son. But to have a son he needed a wife. And to get a new wife he needed a divorce. Only the Pope, the head of the Church, could give him a divorce, and the pope said no!
    - - Henry wanted to control the Church. Since Medieval times there had been struggles over whether priests should obey the Pope or the King. The powerful monasteries were loyal to the Pope. Henry VIII resented this. He wanted to control the Church in his own country.!
    - - Henry had never had the financial skill or wit that his father had, and slowly all the Tudor money had drained away. He led an extravagant lifestyle, he fought expensive wars against Scotland and France. He was desperately in need of cash. The catholic Monasteries were particularly wealthy and there were several payments that went from English congregations to Rome.
    - - Henry was worried that God was displeased with him. He had a son by one of his mistresses (Henry Fitzroy) but not by his wife. Clearly he was being punished. Some people wanted to abandon the catholic church in England because of its corruption (as suggested by Luther). Was the catholic church the reason God was angry?
