2.5 STORAGE - Coggle Diagram
2.5 STORAGE
HARD DISK
FUNCTION: storage device that contain ones or more inflexible ,cirlular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions and information.
CHARACTERISTIC:
- high-capacity storage
-components enclosed in airtight, sealed case for protection.
1) INTERNAL HARD DISK
-An internal hard disk can be mounted inside a desktop or
laptop
-HDD come in two sizes. The 3.5″ model is mostly used in Desktop computers, and the 2.5″ model is used in Laptops.
2) EXTERNAL HARD DISKS :
-An external hard disk is a separate
freestanding storage device that connects with a cable to a USB
port or other port on a computer or mobile device.
SOLID STATE DRIVES
FUNCTION : A storage device that uses flash
memory to store data, instructions and information
-
BENEFITS :
-Faster access time.
-Faster transfer rates.
-More durable & shock resistant
(no moving parts)
-Use less energy →Generate less heat &
consume less power.
-
OPTICAL DISC
DEFINITION :
- Optical disc is a storage media that consists of flat,
round, portable disc made of metal, plastic and lacquer that is written and read by a laser.
-Stores data in deformities on the surface of a circular
disc and reads this data by illuminating the surface with a laser diode and observing the reflection.-Primarily used to store software, data, digital photos,
movies and music.
1) Compact Disc (CD)
- A type of optical disc used to store data,
songs, drivers, and program files.
Types of CD:
a) CD-ROM
-Users can read but not write (record) or erase.b) CD-R
-Users can write (in separate time), but not erase.c) CD-RW
-Users read and write on multiple time, erasable.
2)Digital Video Disc (DVD)
-Used mainly as video and data storage
-Holds over 7 times a CD’s capacity.
-Types of DVD are :
a) DVD-ROM
b) DVD-R
c) DVD-RW
3) Blue-ray Disc (BD)
-A type of optical disc used to store high- definition
and ultra high-definition videos and movies.
-It uses a blue laser instead of a red laser to read
and write data on the disc.
-Allow for six times more storage than a DVD.
Types of BD are :
a) BD-ROM
b) BD-R
c) BD-RE
FLASH MEMORY STORAGE
DEFINITION:
Flash memory storage is a storage media that uses
solid-state chip that maintains stored data any external power sourcewithout
1) USB flash drive
Flash memory storage that users plug in a USB port
on computers or mobile devices.-
2) Memory cards
-Flash memory storage that users insert and remove from
a slot in personal computer, smartphone, digital camera,or card reader/writer.
-Examples: CompactFlash, microSD, Memory Stick Micro
DEFINITION STORAGE : storage holds data ,instructions and information for future use.
DEFINITION STORAGE DEVICE : hardware that records and/retrieves items to and from storage media.
DEFINITON STORAGE MEDIA : the physical material on which a computer keeps data , information , programs and applications.
DEFINITION STORAGE CAPACITY: capacity is the number of bytes (characters) a storage medium can hold.
Characteristic of storage:
-storage is non-volatile ; it does not lose its contents even when the power is off.
-storage has bigger capacity compared to memory, which has limited capacity.
-transfer rate of storage is slower compared with the transfer rate of memory.
