3 Types of muscles and functions
Cardiac
- only found in the heart, involuntary, intercelated discs, pumping action of the heart, striated
Smooth
- are elongated with tapered end, and lack striations, contain thick and thin filaments, slower to contract and relax
Skeletal
- movement of bones at joints, maintenance of posture, voluntary, well- developed transverse tubule system
Sarcomere
extend from one Z-line to the next
I bands = actin filaments
A bands = overlapping thick & think filaments
H zone = consists of myosin filaments only; center of A band
M line = consists of proteins that hold myosin filaments in place
Neurmuscular Junction
Step 3 - Synaptic vessels release acetylcholine through exocytosis
Step 2 - Voltage Gated Channels open → ions diffuse → Terminal
Step 4 - Synaptic cleft binds to acetylcholine receptors (contain ligand gated cation channels)
Step 1 - An action travels in the same length as an axon through the axon terminal
Step 5 - the ligand-gated channels open
Sliding Filament Theory of Muscle Contraction
- motor neuron signals are sent to the brain where muscles sarcolemma cause an impulse , it travels through the membrane and causes calcium to release and bind to the actin, then changes to the myosin, using ATP which causes muscle contraction.
Action Potential in a Muscle Fiber
Muscle Contraction
Muscle Relaxtion
Muscle Coverings
Connective Tissue Covering
Fascia
- layers of dense connective tissue; surround and separate each muscle
Tendons
- fused to the periosteum of bones
Aponeuroses
- broad sheets of connective tissue
Epimysium
- layer of tissue around each skeletal muscle
Perimysium
- extend inward from epimysium; surrounds fascicles
Endomysium
- cover each muscle cell (fiber)
