Factors of Salisbury's High Crime Rate
Culture
This suburb traditionally has a reputation of high crime rates, being statistically recorded as among Adelaide's most dangerous suburbs.
This leads to families being raised into a culture where some crimes are socially acceptable and considered 'normal'
With no one to report these crimes and enforce punishment, citizens continue committing offenses.
If an outsider were to enter this suburb with intention to perform illegal activity, citizens here would consider even a clearly criminal person normal, because of culture here.
Criminals will less likely be caught or reported.
Due to poverty, people with high levels of education do not exist, with Salisbury instead supporting high numbers of people with violet culture.
Landuse
Using figure 5, there is clearly high variations of landuse in this area.
Though most is suburban, Salisbury has a large number of industrial facilities and recreational reserves
This creates public space where vandalism and assault is more likely to occur.
Many of these public spaces are also unsupervised, making crime easier to be undetected, e.g. parks.
With so much variation in facilitates here, theft is more supported as bigger shopping centers and supermarkets would be available to customers.
Poverty
Being under poverty creates desperation in people, resolving into lifestyles of illegal activity
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the weekly income for average families in Salisbury is $735, suggesting poverty here.
Drug, gambling and alcohol usage are also common factors of poverty, all of which lead to situations prone to crime
With an overall poorer suburb, crime culture also grows, normalizing crime
Population
Though crime in this area is high, the population is also relatively high, with 144,872 people living here.
Unlike the CBD, this population resides here, meaning a community of people likely to commit crimes are all close.
Not only does a larger number of people assist in crime committing, but encourages others to do so.
This population is also familiar with the land and area, decreasing chances of getting caught.
