Earthquakes
Preparedness and Responses to earthquake
Preparedness Measures
Land use regulation
Success and example
Land use regulation also prohibits of building development along coast or low-lying land which are vulnerable to tsunamis.
Example: California, USA.
All new building developments are not built across fault lines or areas at risk of liquefaction
E.g.
Along the coasts of Japan and North America,
development of buildings are not allowed unless protective barriers such as seawalls facing the ocean are constructed
Challenges
Reluctant to move
Existing owners might be reluctant to give up land as they often believe that another hazard would not happen
Costly
Govt buy land from private owners, compensate those who have to move and build the protective measures.
Infrastructure
Emergency Drills
Earthquake and tsunami monitoring and warning system
Responses to Earthquakes
Long-term Responses
Provision of healthcare
Improve infrastructure
Short-term Responses
