The causes of crime
-
Lea and Young argue that these are the causes of crime: relative deprivation, marginalisation, and deviant subcultures
Late modernity, exclusion and crime
The bulimic society
Young argues that our late modern society is media saturated and constantly exposed to consumer culture, advertising of consumer goods, and media generated lifestyles. Those who are economically excluded cannot afford to participate in consumer society.
The toxic mix
Young sees three features of late modernity intensify feelings of relative deprivation:
- Growing individualism
- Weakening of informal controls
- Growing economic inequality and economic change

Left Realism
Left realists believe crime is a serious problem in deprived inner-city areas. Working class not just more likely to be perpetrators but also the victims of crime. Poor white and ethnic minority have the highest fear and risk of crime. They also believe that white collar has little direct impact on the lives of everyday people.
