TEACHING GAMES IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
BENEFITS OF COOPERATIVE GAMES
children can have fun and learn positive things about themselves and about how they should behave in their world
everybody cooperates everybody wins and nobody loses
cooperative games emphasizes on acceptance, cooperation and sharing
children play with one another rather than against one another
the games eliminate fear of failure and the feeling of failure
they also reaffirms a child's confidence in himself of herself
children increase communications skills, learn to trust and develop positive social skills
TYPES OF GAMES
COOPERATIVE GAMES
Emphasize group interaction and positive socialization in a cooperative setting that do not emphasize competition
Three types of Cooperative Games:
-Group initiatives
-Group problem-solving
-Trusting games
FORMAL GAMES
More complex than the lead up games where rules and strategies are significant example half-court basketball or six-aside football
LOW LEVEL GAMES
Easy, simple rules and little or no equipment
According to the theme example seasonal games, holiday or etc
Low level games are classified according to the category of movement skills that they promote
LEAD UP GAMES
Active games that use two or more sport skills, rules or procedures used in playing games like football, basketball and etc
Gives students opportunities to use these various sports skills
COMPETITIVE AND COOPERATIVE
even cooperative games should emphasize high levels of participation and self-improvement, not winning or losing
COPEC (council on physical education for children 1992) encourages teachers to allow competition to be personal, child directed choice and not teacher mandate
ATTAINING P.E GOALS THROUGH GAMES
make sure that your game content is developmentally appropriate goes a long way towards ensuring that your game unit helps students strive for appropriate overall physical education goals
Effective P.E program is physical activity, cognitive, social development, application of movement skills and concepts.
WAYS TO MODIFY GAMES
e.g. have student throw and catch with a partner while on the move
e.g. have student dribble a ball while moving through general space, changing directions, pathways and speed
using small sided teams, incorporate locomotor skills, modifying traditional rules the 3 best ways to ensure that your students get adequate physical activity
