The main type of unemployment that is seen in 2021 is cyclical unemployment. Cyclical unemployment is when there are low demands in a specific type of goods/service, so the job has few positions available. When there are too many people working on a job that has a low demand, employees have to be let off to prevent business failure. Covid-19 forced people to stay in lockdown, so that the virus did not spread. In turn this resulted in the economy having a major recession and jobs involving physical contact like hair dressing, where interactions are a must, had to let their employees go. Cyclical unemployment has economic consequences, if the situation becomes extreme then the economy could fall into a larger recession. Economic problems are not the only faults that arise from Cyclical unemployment, as the political system is also affected. A political consequence that could happen is social unrest. This is a large problem that occurs as people who are upset with their situation, tend to take it out on the government, wanting compensation to support them through tough times. Finally a social consequence which happens is workers who are laid off of work for too long, may not be able to get another job in the future if they become ‘rusty’.
