Current perception Over the past several years DOC have adopted a more conservationist perspective of the TVC environment. DOC has now adapted a dual perception of the TVC environment, conservation of the indigenous flora and fauna, and also enabling the recreational use of the TVC environment. DOC's view has therefore changed over time. DOC is now working to protect the natural ecosystems from exotic plants and animals and preserve the parks natural features. DOC' now has a focus to eradicate the heather plant and pine trees from this environment. This has proven to be a vey difficult task as both exotic plants regenerate easily and quickly. After a number of failed attempts to physically remove the heather plant, the heather beetle was introduced to 'kill off' the heather. There is growing evidence, especially with the involvement of local iwi in the management of the TVC, that the perception is becoming more and more of a sustainable perspective, with a focus on preserving and protecting the current environment for future generations to be able to experince.
