FESTIVITIES
The Orthodox Christmas
It is celebrated on 7 January because in 1918, when the new calendar was adopted, the Russian Orthodox Church did not want to abandon the Julian calendar, which was 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar.
Victory Day
It is celebrated on 9 May, marking the victory of the Soviet Union and the Allies over Nazi Germany in World War II. Something interesting about this festivity is that Nazi Germany signed the end of World War II on 8 May 1945 at 22:43 Central European Time (0:43 Moscow time on 9 May).
RELIGION
Islam
Islam is the second most professed religion in Russia. Russian Muslims may be ethnic Russians as well as immigrants from former Soviet republics such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
