        The first show with captions was in 1972, The French Chef with Julia Child.
        
        The captioning device cost about $200 in 1970s (same as the TVs at that time).
        
        Deaf people had to pay double even though not many shows were captioned.
        
        The National Captioning Institute (NCI), a nonprofit corporation, was created in 1979.
        
        In 1982, NCI invented a way to caption real-time, live boradcasts and announcements where captioners type up to 250 words er minute using a special machine.
        
        The Television Decoder Circuitry Act of 1990, mandated that all TV 13 in' or bigger needed to include caption-decoding microchip.
        
        Telecommunications Act of 1996, required that digitial television receivers include caption technology
    - - The Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 required broadcasters to include captioning for cable television programs; and HD TV boxes to include a close caption button.
        
        Closed Caption (CC) This may be turned on using a remote control or by pressing a button on the bottom of the screen. For example: YouTube captioning.
        
        Open Caption (OC) These are permanently embedded on the screen. They cannot be turned off or removed.
        
        The current option most movie theathers use is a seat-based caption system called rear Window Caption (RWC)
