Factual Belief vs Religious Credence
Religious Credence
Perceived normative orientation
Gives people a sense of what should be
Prescribes an idea of the good and the beautiful
So there is normative orientation
Susceptible to free elaboration
Present society is very different to when most religious scriptures were produced
May not directly relate to modern society, so elaboration is needed to make sense of them
Extension from previous scenarios to suit present scenarios with different context
Vulnerable to special authority
Credence often originates from an figure who is anointed as admirable, wise and authoritative
Belief in these figures comes as they are simply anointed, rather than by reasoning
Example
Jesus rose from the dead
We believe in the story just because Jesus was anointed as a special authority
We have to use elaboration to apply the learnings from that story to our modern society
It preaches qualities such as salvation and indicates to people how we should live and believe
It does not form the basis of our understanding of other things
Eg. we do not believe in any other creature resurrecting
Does not follow any characteristics of Factual Belief
Credences change based on context
Eg.Wine as blood of Christ in Church vs Wine as a beverage at a dinner
They do not form the baseline of how we understand all things
Stubborn to change based on evidence
Factual Belief
Practical setting independent
Do not change based on surrounding setting
Context independent
Operates in the background
Eg. Our understanding of gravity applies everywhere
Cognitively govern other attributes
Operates in the background and dictates all other inferences
Forms the baseline of how we understand things
Even in imaginations, our thoughts tend to still be governed by beliefs
Evidentially vulnerable
Subject to change based on available evidence
We believe in Factual Beliefs because there is evidence supporting them
Factual Beliefs operate based on evidence
Example
Factual Belief of Gravity
It does not change from based on the setting
Applies whether you are in London or Amsterdam
It governs how we understand everything else in the world
It is the baseline of how we understanding physics
It is backed by evidence
Our understanding of gravity/how it works changes with new evidence
