Formative
Definition: this assessment gives the teacher feedback on that the student know on the topic. These assessments have low stakes grade wise and are used to modify instruction
Discussion. This can help the teacher understand what they students know from having a conversation with them. It has be lower stress than taking a formal quiz and usually has no grade.
Quiz. This can be a short quiz after a lecture to see what the students understood from the lesson and what areas need to be gone over again.

Summative
Definition:This is at the end of a unit to evaluate the students understanding of the unit as a whole. These have high grade stakes and need to be prepared for.

Unit tests. These are produced by the teacher to understand what they students got from an entire section of the unit.
Performance
Definition: an assessment to understand the students knowledge over the subject that are not in a basic question/ answer format.
Projects. These can be used to see if the student understand the subject enough to apply it in different formats.

Diagnostic
Definition:This is used before a lesson to understand what students may already know or what they need to know. It can be used for teachers to adjust their instruction.
anticipation guides. This can be used to get students thoughts on a subject before they go over the subject.
