Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is a brief way of figuring out how well the students understand the content being presented to them. This can be used to modify instruction based on results. These types of assessments usually have little to no weight assigned to them.
Example: Students will take part in a quick write and will write as much as they can about the content in 3 minutes.
Example: Asking questions while moving around the classroom while students are participating in group work.
Example: Students will play an in class game over the current content. For example, Gimkit, Quizziz, Kahoot, etc.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used as a form of pre-testing to see where students knowledge is going into a new unit. This information can be used to determine what content need to be focused on more.
Pre-test: A pre-test is designed to see what prior knowledge a student has on a subject, and what, if any, misconceptions need to be addressed.
Anticipation Guide: This is designed to see what a students background knowledge is as well as see how they are viewing the upcoming content.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to gauge where students are halfway through the semester. This information is used to change instruction if needed.
District Assessments: These are standardized tests given by a district to evaluate student performance and teacher performance.
Nine Weeks Test: These are school based tests designed to evaluate student knowledge based around a particular set of TEKS taught during a nine weeks period.
Summative
Definition: Summmative assessments are used to test a students knowledge, rather than check in on a students knowledge. SA's give insight into the students weaknesses and areas of possible improvement. The data from SA's can be used to tailor instruction to the students.
EOC Exam: The end of course exam is a test to see what the students have learned over the course of the entire school year. This is a way for teachers to see how well their students did.
STAAR Testing: The STAAR test is a standardized test designed to test student knowledge in a particular subject area. This test is designed to see where students need more help in instruction and where they are strong with their content knowledge.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment which requires a student to perform a task or action to show content literacy rather than answering questions.
PBL: Project based learning makes students show what they know through a product rather than a test. This product is made through research and presented to the class.
Visual Storytelling: Students perform a play or act out a scene which describes what they have learned on a subject.
