Grammar Translation Method
Characteristics of Grammar Translation Method
Classes are taught in the students' L1.
Attention is given to lists of isolated vocabulary and grammar rules.
Reading is given almost exclusive focus with related grammatical analysis.
Translation exercises are performed (usually from the L2 to the L1).
Little or no attention is given to oral production.
Advantages of Grammar Translation Method in Language Teaching
Helps students to improve the reading and writing proficiency of the targeted language.
The students have to memorize a lot of vocabularies which help them to make different kinds of sentences.
It is beneficial to use in the class where there are students of various levels.
It helps the students to understand the sentences better due to the direct translation of L1.
Disadvantages of Grammar Translation Method in Language Teaching
The students has less of listening and speaking skill hence there might be a problem in proper pronunciation.
Lacks of creativity among the students because of extensive memorization.
The students get less opportunity to interact with the teachers.
The fluency to communicate in L2 might not be achieved due to the students prefer to use L1 in communicating with other people.
Basic Premises
A foreign language teaching practices that translates from second language to native language.
Originally known as the Classical Method in the late 19th and changed to the Grammar Translation Method in early 20th century.
It is still being practiced in teaching activities nowadays since it makes use of translation and grammar study.
The Direct Method
Characteristics of the Direct Method
Instruction was conducted directly in the target language
Oral communication and listening skills were taught in small classes
Methodology consisted of mainly of modeling and practices
Focused on everyday language
Grammar was taught inductively
Basic Premises
Language learning should be more like first language learning
Lots of interaction
Spontaneous use of the language
No translation between first and second language
Little or no analysis of grammatical rules
Also known as natural and conversational method
Advantages of the Direct Method in Language Teaching
Grammar was taught inductively
Instructions are given in the target language.
This method focused on question-answer patterns.
Speaking skills is the most important aspect hence pronunciation and grammar are taken into account.
Disadvantages of the Direct Method in Language Teaching
Not convenient for large classes
Its success may have been more of a factor of the teacher’s skill than of the methodology itself
Little or no attention to some skills like reading and writing
Did not take well in public education
