MindMap of Cholera
How does science combat Cholera today
What are the specific details
The FDA approved a single-dose live oral cholera vaccine called Vaxchora®. Vaxchora is recommended to prevent infection in adults who are 18 – 64 years old and are traveling to an area of active cholera transmission with toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 (the bacteria strain that most commonly causes cholera).
What are the Limitations of this such as socially and economically
Cholera vaccine is a live, attenuated (weakened) vaccine which can be shed in stool for at least 7 days. Tiredness, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, and diarrhea can happen after cholera vaccine.
what about other places
In rich and urban countries catching cholera is very rare, and even if you catch it you will get a treatment, but in rural places such as southern india, there was a massive cholera outbreak that caused 73 deaths, this is because the conditions of the area is very unsanitary and dirty,
How is cholera transmitted
Cholera may be contracted by drinking polluted water or eating food that has been infected with the cholera bacterium. During an epidemic, the cause of contamination is often an infected person's excrement, which contaminates water or food. The illness spreads quickly in places with insufficient sewage and drinking water treatment.
What population is most likely to catch cholera
The disease affects males and females in equal numbers. Children are more susceptible to cholera than adults, especially those children under the age of five years. Major outbreaks of cholera usually occur during the warmest part of the year.
What conditions caused the disease and how does it relate to societal health
What development indicators help to show patterns of disease prevalence
How does cholera affect the GDP/capita and the HDI
2007 Africa outbreak: The 110,837 cases of cholera notified in 2007 resulted in an economic loss of US$43.3 million, US$60 million and US$77.7 million assuming life expectancies of 40, 53 and 73 years respectively. The main driver of costs of cholera in this study is the premature deaths of young children.
Each year, cholera infects 1.3 to 4 million people around the world, killing 21,000 to 143,000 people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The HDI had a less strong negative correlation with cumulative cholera incidence. The GNP per capita and female literacy rates were weakly and negatively correlated with cholera cumulative incidence rates.

What causes cholera to spread
Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
What is the scientific solution currently used to prevent Cholera
Tetracycline has been shown to be an effective treatment for cholera and is superior to furazolidone, cholamphenicol, and sulfaguanidine in reducing cholera morbidity.
Rehydration therapy, the primary treatment for cholera patients, refers to the prompt restoration of lost fluids and salts. Antibiotic treatment reduces fluid requirements and duration of illness, and is indicated for severe cases of cholera.
When was it first discovered by scientists?
The germ responsible for cholera was discovered twice: first by the Italian physician Filippo Pacini during an outbreak in Florence, Italy, in 1854, and then independently by Robert Koch in India in 1883, thus favoring the germ theory over the miasma theory of disease.
Pathogen of causes this disease
Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the toxigenic bacterium Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 or O139. An estimated 2.9 million cases and 95,000 deaths occur each year around the world. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can be severe.

Its a very dangerous disease during the industrial revolution
There were a lot of big outbreaks during the industrial revolution
The symptoms are diarrhea
It is called the blue death
