Formative
Definition:
Formative assessments are assessments administered to students that collectively gather evidence of students' learning. With the evidence gathered from this assessment, teachers are able to adjust instruction strategies in order to enhance academic achievement in the classroom.
Example One: VENN DIAGRAM (compare & contrast) ~ Students will need to compare and contrast living and non living organisms.
Example Two: EXIT TICKET ~ Students will need to list how many lines of symmetry each 2-D figure has and students will need to draw the lines after.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim / benchmark assessments are assessments that compare a students' performance against a set of standards within the school year and helps identify any patterns of learning. This type of assessment lets teachers know whether a student has mastered content standards and identifies students' strengths and needs.
Example One: Benchmark Test ~ At the end of the 6-8 week cycle, students must take a state benchmark exam that revisits every topic and concept discussed during the present cycle.
Example Two: STAAR ~ Towards the end of the school year, students will be taking this exam which covers the concepts and knowledge that should have been learned throughout the entire school year.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are assessments used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period.
Example One: Final Exams (hs) ~ At the end of each fall and spring semester, students must take a final exam for every class taken during that semester that assesses their overall learning.
Example Two: Implement RUBRICS within assignments ~ Teachers can use a rubric to layout expected performance criteria for a range of grades. Rubrics will explain to students in detail what exactly an ideal assignment looks like.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are assessments used to collect data on what students already know about the topic. This type of assessment is given at the beginning of the course or unit/topic.
Example One: Pretests ~ Before beginning a unit, teachers can administer pretests in order to determine what the students currently know, if anything, about the concept they will be covering.
Example Two: Phonological Awareness Survey ~ Teachers can assess a student's ability to hear, identify, blend, segment, and manipulate the sound units of English by administering this type of survey.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are assessments that require students to perform a task rather than simply answering questions.
Example One: Presentation ~ Students can create a powerpoint/presentation discussing a specific topic or concept which helps the teacher identify whether the student was able to successfully demonstrate mastery of the concept.
Example Two: Number Book ~ Students in a kindergarten class will be creating their own number book. Students will need to create a page in their book for each number from 0 to 10 showing either an addition or subtraction word problem WITH drawings.
