Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/ Benchmark assessments occur periodically throughout the school year where the difficulty is at a low level and there is no student feedback given.
STAAR Testing: A standardized test that students are required to take every year that tests them on their core subject material.
Grading Period Tests: A test that occurs at the end of each grading period that all students take to test them on the specific unit they covered during the grading period.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments occur after a large section of learning is finished (after unit or end of year).
Final Exam: A test that occurs at the end of the year that tests students knowledge on subject material they have learned throughout the school year.
Research Project: Students are given a variety of topics to research about and present their findings in a specific format (essay, powerpoint presentation).
Formative
Definition: Process of gathering evidence of student learning, providing feedback and adjusting instruction strategies to enhance achievement.
Quick-write: Students will write a few sentences based on a specific prompt the teacher gives them. This is usually an exit ticket that can show the teacher what students retained from class that day.
Pop Quiz: A spontaneous quiz that asks students questions about the topic they are currently learning about or learned last class period.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is based on a students ability to execute or complete a task rather than answer a question.
Skills Test: Students are asked to execute specific dance technique skills they have learned and are graded on how accurately they execute the technique.
Teach the Class: Students are asked to teach a concept or skill to the class that they have learned during the year, showing they have mastery on how to complete the task (dance skill, structuring an essay, solving a math equation)
Diagnostic
Definition: A Diagnostic exam is usually used to gauge where a student's learning ability is at, showing the areas of strength and weakness in a student's knowledge.
Pre-Test: Students are given a test at the beginning of the year with material they will learn throughout the year to gauge how much knowledge they have of the topics already.
KWL Chart: Students will compete a chart on a specific topic on what they know about the topic, what they want to know, and what they have learned after a lesson on the topic.
